Fast and reliable broadband is an essential for businesses. Even more so in a world that is increasing its reliance on remote working and digital technologies. Perhaps you are a business looking for an affordable new broadband solution, but you don’t want to rely on a phone line to receive your services. In most instances you will need a working phone line to access broadband, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have broadband without a phoneline.

Available Broadband Access Services

In the UK there are four main ways in which you can access broadband services. Some of these will require a landline while others do not. The four types include 4G/5G mobile broadband, cable, fibre optic and ADSL. Each one of these connections brings with it its own benefits and drawbacks, but it’s important to know what they all do and how they operate before you make a decision as to whether a broadband option without a landline is right for you.

ADSL broadband will use copper telephone wires and as a result you will need a landline to access this type of connection. If ADSL is the only option available to you, you will need to pay for line rental and service charges to maintain access to your broadband.

A fibre or cable connection increases the chances that you will be able to obtain broadband without a phone line, but this will depend on the service provider and the packages that are available.

Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband is widely available and offers superfast speeds, typically between 30mpbs and 70mbps, but this will use the same copper phone lines as ADSL so you will need a phone line.

Broadband without Line Rental

It may be possible to obtain a broadband connection without paying line rental because this can sometimes really increase the cost. However, in order to do so you may need what is known as fibre to the premises, cable or full fibre broadband. This service will not use the traditional phone lines to deliver the signal to your premises, it will instead use an alternative cabling system.

Another option if you want access to wireless broadband is the use of mobile wi-fi. Usually this will be delivered as a small device that you will connect to, but it will operate of mobile networks accessing 4G or 5G data. That said, this type of data use may not be sufficient for business use, so it’s always worth researching this in more detail before you commit to a contract.

The most important thing to remember is the cost implications of accessing broadband without a landline. It’s certainly possible but some of the options are expensive so always make sure that you thoroughly research the available connections, so you get the best one for your business.
