Updated 16 October 2026.
The UK PSTN switch-off changes the practical comparison between a traditional landline and business VoIP. BT Business and Openreach currently state that the PSTN retirement date is 31 January 2027, so a business choosing its next phone service should plan for an internet-protocol replacement rather than another long-term dependency on the old network.
How the services differ
A traditional landline carries voice over the legacy telephone network. VoIP carries calls over an internet connection and can make a business number available on compatible desk phones, computers and mobile apps. That flexibility can help office, hybrid and remote staff use one managed business service.
The change also affects equipment connected to an analogue line. Alarms, lift emergency phones, card terminals, fax machines, franking machines, door entry and telecare devices need their own compatibility checks. A voice service migration does not automatically make those devices IP-ready.
Numbers, timing and resilience
Broadgate Voice provides free number porting, so an eligible existing business number can move to a cloud or VoIP service. The typical Broadgate switch-over is 24–48 hours once the required details and arrangements are ready, but complex number ranges or mismatched provider records can take longer.
VoIP depends on broadband, local networking and power. A business should assess call volume, router configuration, Wi-Fi coverage and what happens if the main connection fails. Sites that need uninterrupted calling may require backup connectivity, mobile fallback or power protection.
What does it cost?
Confirmed GoYap prices are £9.99 ex VAT per user per month for Bronze Mobile, £14.99 ex VAT for Desktop and £19.99 ex VAT for Combined Mobile + Desktop. The minimum term is 60 months. Any setup charge depends on whether an engineering visit is needed.
